Recommendations for NLP in Education

Every industry is always asking the question: What's next? This question has never been more important than it is now in the field of artificial intelligence in education. We are on the precipice of a monumental change in how students learn and teachers teach, and there are important considerations to be made to avoid the precariousness of AI.

Recommendation #1: Education Forum

I believe that students, especially K-12 students, are the most impressionable ChatGPT users. Students across the world will soon exist in a reality where they use AI in almost every dimension of their life. It will have the power to shape their ideas, perceptions, self-reliance, and growth. ChatGPT and other chatbots will grow more prominent in education, and it is imperative that students understand not only how to use them effectively, but also the implications for the future. They need to understand exactly what AI is, what it is capable of, and what it will potentially look like in the future in order to develop the best relationship with it and not have it deteriorate their critical thinking and self-regulation.

OpenAI should establish an interactive forum for K-12 teachers and students to have a high level overview of generative AI, how NLP works, what large language models are, and how to use ChatGPT effectively while understanding its limitations and ethical considerations. This will equip everyone in K-12 education with the tools to make informed decisions about how they use AI and help give them a balanced perspective of the technology so as to not become reliant on it. There are many ways in which AI feels magical; therefore, the more that we learn how to rationalize it and view it in a nuanced manner, the more realistic it will feel, and the less likely we will be to assume it is the best tool for any activity. OpenAI has the platform and audience to influence and direct a lot of the conversation around AI in education. With their bastion of resources for research and development, I think that they have the means to create a specific forum with resources for both students and teachers.

Recommendation #2: ChatGPT Education Model

Another recommendation that would improve OpenAI's influence in the education space would be to create a ChatGPT model that is designated for use in K-12 for academic assignments. It would have parameters set for specific grades, suggestions for certain uses based on different tasks, and guided prompts for certain activities. It would tailor its responses to each student's age and grade and the assignment that they are working on or topic that they are trying to learn.

An example of the ChatGPT education model would be a guided outline for writing an essay. If a student asked ChatGPT to write them their entire essay, it would prompt the student to write the essay on their own, with the help of the model for outlining purposes. It would ask the student for the topic and any relevant ideas, arguments, and resources for the essay and then create an outline that includes questions that allows the student to engage in critical analysis in order to answer them and write the essay in their own words. The more that the chatbot can help students flesh out their own ideas, rather than producing ideas for them, the more effective the learning experience will be for the student. Students would have the ability to export their chat into a document that synthesizes the chat into actionable insights.

The education model will also have the option for anonymous usage, so that both students and institutions will be in control of their data and privacy when using the tool.
